No ads, no paid recommendation. Signal is considered the gold standard for private communication among IT security experts, because of consistent encryption, minimal metadata and the nonprofit structure behind it.
I personally use WhatsApp to stay in touch with my family, because that's simply where almost everyone is, and Signal for friends, school and everything else where I have the choice.
Why end to end encryption isn't always the same thing
An important difference that's often overlooked at first glance.
Default or optional
With WhatsApp and Signal, encryption is always active. With Telegram it's only active if you actively start a secret chat, regular chats aren't.
Metadata often stays visible
Even with the best encryption, some providers still see who communicates with whom and when, even if the message content itself is protected.
What actually matters
How much a messenger knows about you doesn't just depend on encryption, but also on the business model and how openly the code can be reviewed.
